José Manuel Porcel, medical director of Arnau de Vilanova, elected Master of the American College of Physicians
The Master's degree is awarded in recognition of individuals who have made a major contribution to the practice of medicine or medical research
José Manuel Porcel, head of the Internal Medicine Service and medical director of the Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova, as well as full professor at the University of Lleida (UdL) and researcher at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRBLleida), has been elected Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP) in Boston, coinciding with the annual congress of this medical organization held on April 18-20, 2024.
The title of Master is the highest that can be achieved at the American College of Physicians (ACP), the largest medical organization in the United States, which currently has 161,000 members. The new Masters are a small group of Fellows (a category achieved by José Manuel Porcel in 2000) nominated anonymously by at least four Masters and finally selected by different ACP committees.
The election as a Master recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a great contribution to the practice of medicine or medical research, in addition to an intense involvement in the work of the ACP. Porcel, who is also the current second vice-president of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI), is the only Spaniard to have obtained this title in its more than 100-year history.
