ICREA Academy for UdL professor Ferran Barbé
This research award is endowed with 200,000 euros spread over five years.
The Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies has distinguished the research work of Ferran Barbé Isla, professor at the University of Lleida (UdL), with an ICREA Academy 2023. The professor of Respiratory Medicine, together with the professorships of the Higher Polytechnic School of the UdL, Luisa F. Cabeza and Daniel Chemisana, has been one of the 40 beneficiaries this year of this program, promoted and funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya to reward excellence in research of teaching staff and research doctor of the Catalan public universities who teaches and is both in an active and expansive phase of his research career. Created in 2008, its objective is to promote this career and retain the country's research talent.
The people selected in this fifteenth edition were 25 men and 15 women. Each of them will receive 40,000 euros per year for a period of 5 years. In addition to Barbé, F. Cabeza and Chemisana, 12 researchers from the Universitat de Barcelona, 10 from the Autónoma de Barcelona, 7 from Pompeu Fabra, 3 from the Politècnica de Catalunya, 2 from Rovira i Virgili, 2 from Ramon Llull, and 1 from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya will receive the grant. With a degree in medicine from the UdL and specialized in pneumology at the Hospital de Bellvitge in Barcelona, Barbé holds a PhD from the Universitat de Barcelona and a diploma in dreams from the Université René Descartes in Paris. He is currently the territorial clinical director of chronic respiratory diseases in Lleida, director of the research group in Translational Research in Respiratory Medicine at the Institute of Biomedical Research of Lleida (IRBLleida) and until June 2023, he was the scientific director of the Center for Biomedical Research Network of Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) of the Carlos III Institute of Health in Madrid.
His main lines of research focus on obstructive sleep apnea, non-invasive mechanical ventilation and recently on respiratory sequelae and molecular mechanisms produced by COVID-19, as well as on innovation in the management of chronic health problems. Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia since 2019, this professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the UdL, has among other awards, the Research Career Award in Hospitals of the Catalan Institute of Health (2022) and the Gold Badge of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (2022).
ICREA Academia implies priority dedication to research activities during the five years of the program, thanks to an annual grant of 16,000 euros for each researcher, a grant of 20,000 euros for their university -which must be used for research projects and the hiring of personnel to reduce the teaching work of the ICREA Academia-, as well as a 4,000-euro fee for program management.
Currently the UdL has two more ICREA Academies in force: Carolina Villacampa, from the Faculty of Law, Economics and Tourism, and Flocel Sabaté, from the Faculty of Arts.
