ASISA-UdL Chair awards a thesis on sleep quality in hospitals
6,500 in grants to master's degree students
Filip Bellon, PhD in Nursing and researcher with the Health Care Research Group (GReCS), has won the eighth ASISA Chair in Health, Education and Quality of Life Award at the University of Lleida (UdL) for the best doctoral thesis in these fields for a paper on the impact of nursing interventions and hospitalization on the quality of sleep of patients. Bellon received the 1,500 euros of the award in a ceremony that took place in the Victor Siurana Hall of the Rectorate. At the same ceremony, which will include a lecture by Juan Manuel García, professor at the Pablo Olavide University in Seville, the Chair will distribute 6,500 euros in grants to master's degree students.
The thesis, entitled The impact of nursing interventions and hospitalization where patients' sleep quality, was directed by professors Montserrat Gea Sánchez and Esther Rubinat Arnald of the Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy of the UdL. Bellon conducted two descriptive observational studies on data from 343 patients in 12 public hospitals located in nine different Spanish regions. The results show that patients sleep an average of 56 minutes less in the hospital compared to at home and that night nursing interventions negatively affect sleep quality. The research also highlights as effective measures the use of earplugs and sleep masks, music therapy, acupuncture and acupressure, aromatherapy and educational programs on the use of adjuvant measures.
